Plan B Is A Form Of Emergency Contraception

Although commonly known as "the morning-after pill," Plan B can be effective in preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. And if pregnancy is something you're worried about, it's important to act sooner, rather than later.

Plan B morning after emergency contraceptive pill should be used in emergencies like:
·
If you’ve had sex without using a contraceptive
·
Your contraceptive method fails, including:
·
The condom broke, slipped, or was misused
·
You missed your pill 2 or more days in a row
·
Your diaphragm dislodged or was removed too early
·
You miscalculated your fertile period if you use the "rhythm method"
·
In cases of sexual assault
How does Plan B morning after emergency contraceptive pill work?
There are 2 pills in the pack. One should be taken immediately (within 72 hours of unprotected sex), and the second, 12 hours later. Plan B is more effective the sooner you take it.
Plan B morning after emergency contraceptive pill does 1 of 3 things:
·
It temporarily stops the release of an egg from the ovary;
·
It prevents fertilization; or
·
It prevents a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.
Plan B is not an abortion pill. It will not work if you already have a confirmed pregnancy, that is, a fertilized egg has attached to the wall of your uterus.
It will not protect you from HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs/STIs). So don't think of Plan B as your regular method of contraception.
Plan B doesn't provide long-term protection against future pregnancy, rather, it only works to prevent this one incident.
If you're sexually active, even occasionally, the best way to take care of yourself is to find out about all available contraceptives and discuss them with your doctor.
How quickly do I need to take Plan B morning after emergency contraceptive pill?
Plan B must be taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex, or when your contraceptive fails, but it's more effective the sooner you take it. If you aren't sure if Plan B is still an option for you, use the "72-hour calculator" on our site.
Is Plan B morning after emergency contraceptive pill safe for me?
Plan B is the only medication in Canada approved as an emergency contraceptive by Health Canada. It was approved in February 2000 for sale in Canada, and since then, thousands of women have taken it. Plan B, under different names, is available in more than 100 countries around the world.
You should not use Plan B if you have a confirmed pregnancy, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, or are allergic to the ingredients in the pills.
If you're taking any other medication, have known or suspected cancer of the breast, have active liver disease or tumour, have diabetes, you are currently ill, or you have a long-term medical condition, be sure to tell your pharmacist, doctor or health clinic (your CLSC in Quebec) before taking Plan B, and ask them what to do next.
There are some medications that may interact with Plan B and reduce its effectiveness. You should always tell your pharmacist or doctor if you're taking any other medicine or herbal remedies. However, there are no published drug interaction studies of Levonorgestrel, the active ingredient in Plan B.
Will Plan B morning after emergency contraceptive pill work?
Provided you follow the instructions, Plan B is:
·
95% effective within 24 hours of unprotected sex
·
85% effective between 25 and 48 hours
·
and 58% effective between 49 and 72 hours.
There are 2 pills in the pack. One should be taken immediately (but within 72 hours), and the second, 12 hours later.
Your Dose of Plan B morning after emergency contraceptive pill IS Less Likely to Work If:
·
You have unprotected sex again in the same menstrual cycle after taking Plan B
·
You've already had unprotected sex earlier in your menstrual cycle
·
You vomit within 1 hour of taking Plan B (talk to your pharmacist if this happens)
·
You're taking other medication that may reduce the effectiveness of Plan B
If you've already taken Plan B once since your last period and you now find yourself pregnant, do not take Plan B again. It does not work if you already have a confirmed pregnancy. If you feel you need further assistance, call your doctor or local health clinic (your CLSC in Quebec) as soon as possible.
Plan B is not 100% effective and may not prevent pregnancy in every woman.
What can I expect to happen when I take Plan B morning after emergency contraceptive pill?
It's highly unlikely you'll experience any dramatic side effects from taking Plan B. Most women can carry on with their activities as usual. If you do have a headache or feel sick, it should pass fairly quickly. If it doesn't, consult your doctor.
After taking Plan B, most women will get their period when expected. But sometimes your period might come earlier or later, and might be lighter or heavier than usual. You may also experience some "spotting" until your next period. But don't worry, this isn't a sign that anything is wrong. It's just the effect of the progestin hormone on your body.
